Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic condition characterized by increased blood glucose levels as a result of impaired insulin function. According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) the data shows in 2021 there are 536,6 million of the total 5.1 billion adults aged 20-79 years in the wolrd who are declared to have diabetes. Kecombrang contains phenol, flavonoid, glycoside, tannin, steroid, and terpenoid which are anti-hyperglycemic by inhibiting the α-glucosidase, α-amylase, and α-maltase enzymes in the small intestine. The content of gingerol and shogaol in ginger can protect against damage to the β- cells of the pancreas so that it can increase insulin production. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the combination of kecombrang flower extract (Etlingera elatior) and ginger extract (Zingiber officinale) in decreasing blood glucose in alloxan-induced male mice. The research sample consisted of 25 Balb/c strain male mice weighing 20-30 grams which divided into 5 treatment groups. the mice were induced by alloxan with dose of 150 mg/kg BW intraperitoneally. The combination of kecombrang flower extract and ginger extract was administered orally in 50 mg/kg BW, 75 mg/kg BW, 100 mg/kgBW for 7 days. Statistical results showed a greater reduction in blood glucose compared to doses of 50 and 75 mg/kg BW with a percentage of 59,52%.

Keywords: Etlingera elatior, Zingiber officinale, antihyperglicemic, alloxan, Balb/c mice.
